The 'BookSurge Era'

"The below is a review / article that ran in the Guardian UK just after we published the 09/11 Documenting America's Greatest Tragedy book just 19 days after the attacks. For all purposes, this was the world's first "blog book." Definitely one of the proudest pieces of press I have had on a project that really was my first experience of the organic process.

The book went on to sell almost 10,000 copies and won an independent book award for nonfiction. The project was done in cooperation with BlueEar, a global journalism site, and the New York University school of Journalism. This was my first involvement in a large scale publishing project where we controlled the content, distribution and manufacturing end to end. Pretty exciting times... "

Deadline... yesterday.

John Sutherland considers not-so-instant instant reactions to September 11, and wishes that books could take their place in the fast lane of history again.

"...Less than three weeks after the twin towers atrocity, www.BookSurge.com produced 09/11 8.48am: Documenting America's Greatest Tragedy. It was on sale within the month. The content of the 320-page book (a traditional ink and paper job) is choral. It brings together dozens of witnesses, weaving their voices into a complex narrative. It is, essentially, a bundle of stories. And, as in Ray Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451, people have become the incarnation of their stories."

An extensive radio interiew on Entrepreneur Radio with Mitchell talking about self-publishing, print on demand. The interview is in two parts.

An article on the acquisition of BookSurge by Amazon.com, originally published in The Post and Courier (Charleston, SC), on April 1, 2005, and now hosted by the Charleston Regional Development Alliance (CRDA): "Amazon.com plans to purchase North Charleston-based publisher BookSurge."
